Soap or Shampoo bar? Choosing the right shampoo bar

Soap or shampoo bar

Shampoo for dreadlocks - soap bar or shampoo bar?

Dreadlocks are not just a hairstyle - they are a lifestyle.

From the first twist to the mature, beautiful locs, dreadlocks require persistence, patience, and the right care.

One of the most important choices in your routine is shampoo.

We often get the question:
What is the actual difference between a traditional soap bar and a shampoo bar?

Let's take it easy and simple.

Soap bar - lye-based

Soap bars made with lye (also called “soap bars”) have been used for many years for both hair and body.

Lye is the ingredient that makes it possible to convert oils into soap. When the process is complete, lye is no longer active in the product, but it gives the soap a higher pH value, which makes cleansing more powerful.

Examples at RAW ROOTs are:

Greenie Genie Soap Bar
Muddy Luxury Soap Bar

Why choose a soap bar?

Effective cleansing
Soap bars have a higher pH value, which provides more powerful cleansing. This can be an advantage if you need to remove buildup or feel that your dreads need a "reset".

Natural ingredients
They are made with organic plant oils and essential oils, which are a good choice if you want a simple and natural approach.

Durability
Soap bars are solid and long-lasting in use, making them a durable choice.

At the same time, it is important to be aware that the higher pH does not suit all scalps - especially if you tend to dryness or sensitivity.

Shampoo bar - based on mild cleansing ingredients (SCI)

Shampoo bars are not made with lye like traditional soaps, but with mild, plant-based cleansing ingredients (like SCI) that are developed specifically for hair and scalp.

At RAW ROOTs, these include:

Midnight Magic Shampoo Bar
Velvet Bloom Shampoo Bar

Why choose a shampoo bar?

Mild and balanced cleansing
SCI is a gentle cleansing ingredient with a low pH that is closer to the scalp's natural level. This means it cleanses without disturbing the balance.

Rinses out easily (residue-free)
Shampoo bars rinse easily out of dreadlocks and do not leave residues that can get stuck in the hair.

Moisture and comfort
They often contain ingredients that help maintain moisture in both hair and scalp.

While Midnight Magic provides a more deep-cleansing effect, Velvet Bloom is developed for a gentler and more moisturizing wash - especially if your scalp needs calm and balance.

An extra thing many don't think about - sustainability

When choosing between a shampoo bar and liquid shampoo, it's not just about hair and scalp.

It's also about packaging and consumption.

A shampoo bar is a more concentrated product.

A bar of approx. 100 g typically lasts for about 50 hair washes
This often corresponds to approx. 2 x 500 ml of liquid shampoo

At the same time, shampoo bars are packaged in paper instead of plastic.

This means:

  • less packaging
  • less transport weight
  • less waste

It's a quiet way to choose more sustainably - without compromising the quality of your hair care.

What should you choose?

There is no single right answer - it's about your scalp and your needs.

Do you need a more powerful cleanse → a soap bar can be a good choice
Do you need balance, mildness, and moisture → a shampoo bar is often better

Many actually choose to combine them.
For example, a deep-cleansing wash occasionally - and a milder shampoo for everyday use.

One last piece of advice

Experiment at your own pace.

Your scalp can change over time, and what works for one period is not necessarily the same later.

The most important thing is not what is "best" in theory
but what feels right for you and your dreadlocks.

When your scalp is in balance, your dreads will often follow suit.
