Throughout the year, our hair and scalp undergo many changes, and the dry, cold air can really take its toll on them. Scalp dryness is a challenge that many of us face, and it can vary from person to person. To alleviate these symptoms and restore balance, we have handpicked three fantastic products that can be a lifesaver, along with a guide to moisturizing care, especially in the cold winter months.
Dreadlocks Winter Care
Frost and cold can be harsh on both skin and hair, and dreadlocks are no exception. Here are a few tips to keep your dreadlocks healthy and moisturized in the winter months:
Oil Treatment: Give your scalp and dreadlocks a moisturizing oil treatment once or twice a month. Apply the oil after a warm bath, cover with a plastic cap and a towel, and let the oil work overnight.
Moisturizing Cream: Use a mild, moisturizing cream for your scalp regularly to prevent dryness and itching.
Aloe Vera: Apply aloe vera gel directly to the scalp as needed to soothe and relieve dry scalp.
Protect Your Dreadlocks: Cover your dreadlocks with a hat or scarf when outdoors in cold weather to protect them from wind and cold.
Regular Dreadlocks Washing: Use a mild dreadlock shampoo and conditioner to remove dirt and product buildup.
Products for an Dry Scalp
Our Hydrating Oil is the key to intense care and moisture for both dreadlocks and scalp. This rich oil formula effectively counteracts dryness and itching, leaving your locks deeply nourished and silky smooth. Hydrating Oil is crafted with carefully selected ingredients to provide the ultimate treatment for your scalp and dreadlocks.
Rescue Tonic
The cooling, nurturing, and moisturizing Rescue Tonic is a spray-based solution that relieves dry and itchy scalp. Enriched with nourishing plant extracts, this tonic works to revive and moisturize the scalp, creating the ideal environment for healthy dreadlocks. Use it to refresh and soothe your scalp anytime, anywhere.
Hydrating Shampoo
The sulfate-free and residue-free Hydrating Shampoo is designed to care for dry and irritated scalp. The delicate composition cleanses gently without stripping natural oils, leaving your dreadlocks clean, refreshed, and completely cared for. If dry and irritated scalp is a recurring problem, it may be due to your shampoo not suiting your scalp. Shampoo bars can also have a drying effect, which is why we recommend this shampoo.
Vinegar Rinse: A Natural Solution for Itchiness
A vinegar rinse can be beneficial for relieving itchiness and irritation in the scalp. At the same time, it also removes accumulated residues from the hair follicles and helps restore the scalp's natural pH level. This deep cleanses both your scalp and your dreadlocks, which can improve their condition.
Here's how to do it:
Mix 2 tbsp. of vinegar with 1 cup of water and pour it into a spray bottle.
Spray the vinegar solution onto your scalp and let it sit for 2-3 minutes.
Rinse your hair thoroughly. (As the hair dries, the smell of vinegar will dissipate.)
Note: If you don't find it effective, you can add a little more vinegar, but be careful and avoid contact with the eyes. If it's too strong, you can dilute it with more water directly in the bottle. Store the solution in your shower or a convenient place so you can easily spray away itchiness up to three times a week.
The Importance of pH Balance
Ensuring that the products you use are pH-balanced can mean the difference between dry, dull hair or healthy, shiny hair. For example, if your shampoo has the wrong pH balance, it can strip away the hair's natural oils and further dry it out. Although most products found in stores nowadays are pH-balanced, it's still important that you understand what this means and how it affects your hair. Read our blog post on pH value by clicking here.
pH Scale:
0-6: Acidic
7: Neutral (e.g., water)
8-14: Alkaline
Hair has a relatively acidic pH value of around 4.5-5.5. Shampoo and conditioner with the right pH value help regulate and maintain the hair's proper acidic pH value.
By following these tips, you can keep your dreadlocks healthy and beautiful all year round, especially in the cold winter months
