The 4 Phases of Dreadlocks - A Journey from New to Mature

Embarking on the adventure of dreadlocks is a journey and a process. A journey through four unique phases that transform loose locks into structured, maturity-embracing dreadlocks. Let's explore these phases in more detail.

1. Baby Dreadlocks:

The first steps into the dreadlock journey are referred to as "Baby Dreadlocks." These newly created dreads are loose, fluffy and have not yet begun their dreadlock process. This is where they are called baby dreads. During this phase, it is quite normal to experience loose hair that requires regular attention and tightening. It's a good idea to be patient and invest time in grooming them yourself or consider a professional tightening at a dreadlock hairdresser.

2. Young Dreadlocks:

After a few months, with regular tightening and grooming, your dreadlocks move into the phase of "Young Dreadlocks." They begin to settle into their new position, and although there may still be loose hair to deal with, it gradually becomes less. Using palm rolling techniques and firming products, they begin to feel firmer and take shape.

3. Teenage Dreadlocks:

After about six months, your dreadlocks reach the teenage stage. They will be firmer and may seem a bit shorter. It is important to roll and stretch them after washing to avoid unwanted shrinkage and bulging. Although there may still be some loose hair, it will gradually diminish and what you will have left will be mainly from the growth at the base. If you're not already proficient with a crochet hook, it may be time to brush up on the bottom or look up techniques for tightening dreadlocks at the roots.

4. Mature Dreadlocks:

After about a year, your dreadlocks finally reach the maturity stage. They are now fixed, require less maintenance and have gone through all phases. There will still be a few loose hairs, mainly from the base where new hair is growing out. It is recommended to repair the base approximately every three months to preserve their beauty and prevent dreadlocks from growing together at the scalp. You also won't need as many products as in the beginning, but it's still important to use a good shampoo to keep your scalp healthy.

Final Thoughts: All in all, the process of getting dreadlocks is a journey through different stages, each with its own unique touch that looks completely different from person to person. Each stage brings you closer to the mature dreadlocks of your dreams. So embrace every moment of this unique journey and enjoy the uniqueness of each stage as your dreadlocks evolve and become part of your personal style.
